Opportunities and a dilemma :: Corporate life or Business Owner?

A new opportunity that presented itself recently has been quite a dilemma for me. Do I make a switch from what I’ve been doing for the past 8 years (3 years full-time, 5 part-time) towards a more corporate job at a local listed company?

Pros of my current role:

  • There are a lot of interesting projects that small business owners require as well as the occasional major project that provides solutions for enterprises  definitely keeps me on my toes most of the time.
  • Being part of a small team means we can move and react faster to opportunities.
  • Requires me to be very independent as I usually don’t have the luxury of having another colleague to help out in a project or for backup.
  • Growth would be good but definitely risky as we need to find projects/products that can fuel this growth.

Cons:

  • Being small also means we need to prioritize and take charge of opportunities since we can’t waste time.
  • Having to handle everything, and I mean literally everything from hiring the right people, meeting customers, development, support and maintenance sure takes a lot of time and effort.
  • Not having specialists in some areas sometimes means we take more time to get to a solution.

Pros of the opportunity:

  • I will get to be exposed to a whole new work culture in a much bigger company with many subsidiaries.
  • Should have the financial resources to look into many interesting aspects of improving business  processes.
  • Significantly more stable job with better financial prospects.
  • Will get to see things on a much larger scale and operations than I currently can.

Cons:

  • Will probably be a more strict environment since more red-tape will definitely be in place.
  • Will probably have less freedom to pursue own interests in terms of development projects since will have less to do with IT.
