Sending Mom a Garden of Love

Being a person who doesn’t have a green thumb (unlike my parents), I often rely  on Far East Flora’s interesting creations for sending flowers (So far to wife and mom only). Chose a creation called “Garden of Love” for Mom and she asked me what the plants were after receiving them this morning. I had to do some searching and found out that the plants in the vase were Ficus pumila and a Heart shaped Hoya plant. Apparently, both required very little water and indirect sunlight.

Ficus pumila is native to China, Vietnam, and Japan. It is a root-clinging, evergreen perennial. It clings by aerial roots along the stem and has leaves that are small, bright green and heart-shaped. Creeping Fig will grow in moderate shade or sun. This variety has solid green leaves, this is a great plant if you have a wall that is bare. The Creeping Fig will cling to surfaces allowing one to hide an unsightly wall or to just soften the architecture. This plant also works well as an indoor potted plant, as long as it has a sunny spot to sit in.

The Hoya Plant is one of the easiest plants to grow. The wax plant or shooting star is a vine that loves to be ignored. They do very well in hanging baskets both indoors and out. The plant has gorgeous blooms that are called umbels. This is a bonus to the already beautiful plant. Each plant has it’s own personality. Hoya Plants have a wide variety of leaf shape and color. The older the plant the more magnificent the blooms. Hoyas like bright light, not direct sun. They are easy to grow and are often fragrant.

Mom, here’s wishing you a Happy Mother’s Day and hope you have fun looking after the plants in your garden :)

Enjoying a nice Saturday Evening with BBQ and Prawn Fishing @ Marina South Prawn Pond

We celebrated Mother’s day one day earlier this year and at the suggestion of S & E, we headed to Marina South Prawn (and Fishing) Pond (Near Superbowl Golf & Country Club). The weather didn’t hold up too great in the afternoon and down came the typical afternoon showers we’ve been having lately. Luckily, the skies cleared when we reached and we managed to secure a nice spot with a BBQ pit at around 7pm.

The costs for the rental of the fishing rods with cockle baits for 4 hours (3 + 1 free) was $36 per rod. We got rods for 2 and proceeded to start our evening with some prawn fishing. The initial part was pretty slow since we noticed a couple opposite us had already netted themselves 2 full bags of prawns! Luckily, S managed to get a special hook (more flat at the end) that seemed to make it easier to catch the prawns.

Dad also got the BBQ pit going and the food started to get prepared on the chargoal grill. Seems like quite awhile since our last BBQ (can remember our childhood days when we used to frequent Pasir Ris Beach with our families).

Our grand total catch for the day was 12 prawns which was unfortunate for those prawns that ended in our net and went on to the grill. The night started getting a little busier around  10pm with more people streaming in with their fishing rods and nets. For us, it was a nice end to a great Saturday evening as we packed up and headed home.
