It’s been quite some time since my last dive in Pulau Tioman so can imagine how excited I am that will get a chance to do a short dive trip while holidaying at Bali next week. Went scouting around for some information about underwater housing for my Canon S3 IS but apparently there is only something from Ikellite that is (amazingly) more expensive than the camera itself! Don’t think I can bear to part with such a huge amount of money of my first attempt at underwater photography so shall look at getting a housing for our trusty old Canon A80 instead. Not sure if I should also invest in a strobe so am reading up the exploits from ClubSnap’s Underwater Photography section.

Wow! A new S5 IS got announced today with the ability to add on an external flash. One of the main issues I have the current S3 IS (which I got last year) is that the flash isn’t very good for some occassions so the add on capability sounds good. Also, it has up to ISO 1600 with IS which ups the ante a little. This really makes it harder to consider using a dSLR (which has no video function that is quite useful sometimes)?

Finally got my hands on the Sony GPS-CS1 that was recently announced. Had travelled to Singapore Expo for Comex during the Alpha launch and couldn’t get it.. Thank goodness Hai Chew Electronics in good ole Sim Lim Square was selling it. The salesman was pretty helpful in explaining how it worked etc (Forgot to ask his name, but definitely good service!).

Tried out the GPS unit yesterday and couldn’t wait to see the track log on Google Earth! After wrestling with what the heck format are they using, (finally found out it’s NMEA-0183 after googling for “@Sonygps/ver1.0/wgs-84″ and being led to a japanese site), I managed to get it converted into Google KML using GPSBabel. Pretty fun to see the waypoints being mapped out. Can’t wait to use it on my travels!
